Chapter 16

Jack debated it long and hard, and finally he emailed the woman back:

I'm the one who should be sorry. Yes, I'd like to meet you, even though I don't know your name…

Let me know when and where, and how to recognize you.

She replied back not long after.

I have a feeling you'll know me when you see me. But if you'll feel better, I'll be the one with the rose between my teeth.

Tuesday night? How about we meet at the bar at Jean-Georges?

And just like that he had a date.

It was strange that she didn't tell him her name. He rubbed the stubble on his chin, wondering about that. He wondered if he'd know her.

He pictured walking into Jean-Georges and finding Clara waiting for him.

Unlikely. He snorted. Just because he had a slight fixation on her didn't mean anything. Sure, since their last conversation he'd laid in bed and thought about kissing her.

He'd thought about kissing her all over, starting at the base of her tattoo and working his way up before he went all the way down.

He hadn't slept much that night, or many nights since.

Maybe it was just as well that he'd decided to meet with the woman. The last thing he needed was to cross a line with Clara.

"What are you doing?"

He jumped, turning to the door.

Lily stood in the threshold of his office, hands on her hips, frowning at him.

He frowned back at her as he closed his email. "Nothing."

She arched her eyebrow. "Maybe it's time you did something other than nothing."

"Where did you get your sass from?" God, she was delightful. Jill would have loved her granddaughter.

"From you, Grandfather." She strode into his domain and took her seat at the head of the room.

He watched her get her laptop out and arrange it precisely on the desk. "Eleanor wasn't as disrespectful as you."

"How would you know?"

"Ouch." He winced at the truth.

Lily sighed and faced him, her arm draped on the back of her chair. "I'd say I'm sorry but it'd be a lie, because isn't it time you stopped feeling sorry for yourself and got on with your life? You don't have many years left. You're kind of ancient."

"Thanks," he said deprecatingly.

"It's truth." She shrugged. "Max would tell you to get your head out of your ass, but you're my grandfather and I'd never say anything like that to you."

Max had already said something like that to him. He shook his head. "You're a sweet child."

"I know," she said humbly. She stared at him.

"What?" he asked when it became too disconcerting.

"If you wrote something you'd feel better."

He wasn't so sure about that. "How do you know?"

"Because I always feel better when I write, and I figure I got it from you."

He glanced at his laptop. He hadn't written in so long he wasn't sure how to do it. "I wouldn't know where to begin," he mumbled.

"Then begin with 'Once upon a time,'" Lily said. "All the great stories start there."

Or with "There was a woman." He stared at the blank laptop screen.
